I would emphasize the authority over the readability for this book. My seafaring vocabulary has been increased many times over. Many of Morison's passages are quite moving, others gripping, especially in his telling of how Columbus and his crew contend with the weather on the homeward leg of his first voyage, almost delivering his great discovery to the ocean floor instead of to Spain. In preparing for his Pulitzer Prize-winning biographies of Christopher Columbus and John Paul Jones, Admiral of the Ocean Sea and John Paul Jones: A Sailor's Biography he took himself out of the study and onto the high seas, where he traced the voyages of his subjects and "lived" their stories insofar as possible. Yes, Columbus took Indians as slaves.

However, Columbus was usually fairly firm in his instructions for the crew to deal with the natives in a kind, compassionate way, something his crew members and successors in the Americas were not sensitive to in the slightest. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. One must make allowances for the mores of the time, I suppose. I was saddened by Columbus' treatment of the indigenous peoples, but I recognize the challenges he faced and what lead him to do as he did.

I was saddened by Columbus' treatment of the indigenous peoples, but I recognize the challenges he faced and what lead him to do as he did. The problem is that all three dogmas are half-truths. These people also share a common heritage. Though published inI would say it's still the authoritative biography of the person we know as Christopher Columbus, someone obviously extermely important in world history and to America in particular. It takes unbelievable courage to plunge headfirst off the edge of the map and most people now simply cannot understand what it took to face this complete uncertainty without hope of rescue while being responsible for the lives of the crew and property of the crown while doing it.

His personal observations of the land, sea and sailing conditions adds to the richness of the story and makes him the perfect person to help the reader appreciate the events of these momentous voyages. Check out the other significant doers of history and observe if this is true or not.
